AP Language and Composition
Course Description:
An AP course in English Language and Composition engages students in becoming skilled readers of prose written in a variety of periods, disciplines, modes, and rhetorical contexts and in becoming skilled writers who compose for a variety of purposes. The course objective is to enable students to read complex texts with understanding and to write prose of sufficient richness and complexity to communicate effectively with mature readers. This course is intended to prepare students for the AP Language and Composition exam in May, as well as the writing they will see at the college level.
It is imperative that students understand this course is a college level course designed to replace Freshman Composition during the student's first year of college. Successful students MUST be self-motivated, dedicated, and serious to be successful. APLAC requires students to be able to read, write, and think critically in both structured and unstructured settings. Students will be writing every day with formal essays due approximately every two weeks (and sometimes more often). Self-direction and intrinsic motivation are required as students will be spending several hours, minimum, outside of class per week to adequately prepare.
