Freshman English
Freshman English will provide the building blocks to help students be successful during the next three years of English. Throughout the year we read highly engaging texts with real-world applications to students. We use these texts as a jumping off point to provide discussion, critical and analytical thinking, and personal development. In addition to reading, the students will also increase their writing skills. Many of the writing assignments deal directly with the texts we read in class, but we include a more in-depth research project during 2nd Semester. This research project teaches students the tools of the research process and how to best adapt them to their own learning styles.
Some of the major texts we read in this class are Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, Night by Elie Wiesel, and various Greek Myths, as well as many fiction and non-fiction stories from the text book.
I believe that writing is never truly finished and can always be improved upon. Because of that belief all writing assignments for this class can be rewritten for an improved grade. It is required the student conference with me to discuss what needs to be improved and together we will set a new due date for the assignment. The student is responsible for making sure the new paper is turned in by that date. When the student has turned in the new paper I will regrade it and change the student's score in the grade book to reflect the new grade (not an average of the two grades). This is a great way for students to continue to work on their writing skills as we move through the semester.
